Canadian Silver Dollars

1972 Last silver voyageur

The 1966 dollar was the last circulating silver voyageur dollar. From 1968 until 1986 similar dollar coins continued to be struck for circulation, but of nickel with no silver content.
In 1972 the voyageur silver dollar was only struck in Specimen quality, and came in black imitation leather boxes.
In 1987, when Canada decided to replace one-dollar bills with one-dollar coins the master dies were lost in transit. The dies, which had been produced in Ottawa, were being shipped to production facilities in Winnipeg. The Mint had an alternate design featuring a loon.
