Remembering Murphy’s corollary, there’s a law that states: ‘any dumbproof system always finds a dumb imaginative enough…”, and
just looking at the way things are developing in the e-mails I receive from
some of you, I've rolled up my sleeves in front of the PC to open this section, that I’ll expand as
soon as I obtain further ‘inspiration’ from your messages.
Warning: answers in this FAQ section
might find disturbing/offensive to readers. So, if you’ve inclination to petty
quarrels, just quit reading now or I won’t accept any
liability.
This, because I use a ‘pretty
particular’ kind of wording in order to be understood. Same as many of you.

Questions and
responses on RADAR POI's
- How often are RADAR POI's updated?
RADAR POI's are updated weekly. Usually, a new version is issued every Saturday or Sunday, provided that the HW/SW environment allows to. In specific cases, such
as long weekends or holiday leave times, a new version
is issued in advance.
- How often should I update RADAR POI's?
The answer is quite simple: every
time a new version is issued. Pay attention to the fact hat the evil DGT guys
are installing RADARS everywhere, hiding them, and perhaps they put one close to the place where you live. It's
no use you getting four fines at the end of a day or month. Just, bearing in mind what you pay for POI's... Won't you do it?
-
What's the COPI version?
TomTom
warns on RADARS in your way. However, a number of RADAR
detectors can be found in the market. COPI is specifically made
for those users, so it only contains RADARs that cannot be detected. Anyone owning one of those detectors already knows what I mean. You do not, so forget about that version and just load the standard one.
- For fuck’s sake!, in my way to work I just saw some
workers installing s'thing strange next to the berm. Could I collect the coordinates and report you on
them, or should I wait until they are included in a further version? - I do want a solution!
First of all, calm yourself down. It takes over
one month since workers start their job until the RADAR is in operation. That's due to the
fact it needs to be tested, calibrated, verified and sealed. Bureaucracy has never been fast.
So, you SHOULD
register the RADAR coordinates as soon as possible. So that, the tutorial you
can find in the RADAR POIs zone will be very useful. Please, have a look to the 'how RADARS are' section before, just to avoid making mistakes such as registering an electricity counter. In case of doubt, please send me a photograph, and Kachoperro.net Experts Steering Board will determine what it is
like. (Fuck, how technical this looks!).
All of us have the moral obligation to register
everything new arising. People like you,
collaborating for free, have made the compilation you have in your navigator,
which that much money saved you in fines. Each and everyone must capture, take care, rinse and accurately identify
the location of traps placed in their area.
- In TomTom map, I can see RADAR POIs. If I point on one a long string is shown, with some coded names. Just for my benefit,
what does it mean?
For organizational purposes, Robser describes each RADAR POI upon its type, speed limit and recording chap. In
that way, he knows who to contact in case of doubt. So, those four letters are the abbreviated recording guy's nickname and,
in my opinion, also a small but deserved tribute to him. I mean, the amount Robser pays for each POI is not enough to survive...
- Robser here, Robser there... What is Robser, one brand or
someone real? [Kachoperro’s
Storyteller Mode ON]: Once upon a time, over march 2005, it seems only
yesterday, some poor ragged buddies in ‘todopocketPC’ (internet forum) thought
it would be nice to recoup the cost of their PDAs by making their navigators to
warn them on RADARS in their route. So our ‘other halves’ could understand the
reason behind such expense, not being a whim (of course, we are no longer
children). At that time, the
amount of static RADARS was limited, but the trend was already crystal clear:
they were deriving from mushrooms, so they would soon proliferate. As always in
this Country, everybody agreed, but who would bell the cat? Nice are we,
Spaniards, for that!… But, Good Robser
joined us. He collected a number of dreadful databases, put them together,
cleansed them a bit, and issued the first release. Such a database made the
navigator beep at every streetlamp and panel in the roads. Soon a number of
assistants joined together; just a few of them at the beginning and we were
watched as oddballs. Today, the incompetent policies from the DGT (Spanish
Traffic General Directorate) management has resulted in an exponential growth
of contributors. That’s good,
because each ‘Spanish Autonomic Region’ has already its brigade. Future RADARS
are filed as soon as the DGT workers start making cement. I feel fully proud
to belong to the project. Each POI I record or you record saves a huge amount
of Euros to honorable citizens that do not deserve being mugged by treachery. - Are
there any other RADAR POIs, such as Sampa’s in ‘forocoches’ (internet forum),
those from ‘puntodeinterés’,’ todopoi.tk’ or ‘pdis.es’. Why Robser ones? Is
there any special reason? Are they better? There are some
reasons. There’s no accounting for taste; better to have POIs than not. In
fact, there’s a friendly atmosphere among compilers, and a bunch of ragged
buddies like me are involved in all ongoing messes and compilations. I opted for Robser
POIs mainly for the following reason: both static and hidden RADARs are
covered, and they are sorted by speed. That’s the best structure upon my point
of view. This does not mean
that other POIs are bad. Sampa’s and Todoradares’ ones are conceived for people
provided with other “countermeasures”, so they don’t need hidden RADARs at all.
RADARs are also grouped without sorting them by speed. That’s much simpler but
they leave for you caring about speed; there are many traps there outside and
100-stretches in highways. -
In the shop where I bought my Navigator, they told me about a webpage in the
internet from someone called ‘Kachoperro’ not being trustworthy where I’ll get
loads of viruses and strange things. I was told to download POIs from TodoPOI
of PDIS.es. I’m definitely frightened! Are you fucking
kidding me? Tell that bunch of jerks what the hell that has got to do with the
price of tea in China. I’ve chosen the nick I like and, if I spend all my time
wrestling with this webpage, I cannot generate any viruses. I do not even know
about PHP design… To start with, I
want to clarify that Robser POIs are the same here, in pdis.es, in todoPOI,
etc. Should that shop know that much about navigators as they do about RADAR
POIs, you’d better change provider in your own benefit. -
If seen RADAR POIs for sale in some websites and eBay. Are they better? At present, those
guys selling POIs in eBay are just crooks that copy free POIs and sell them to
gullible folks. They’re just cheating people. Full stop. Robser POIs are
free for personal use. Their commercial or derivate use is forbidden, and the
original file must be kept integer and unchanged. POIs sold in
reliable websites, to be checked. Maybe they are good, maybe not. I have
personally found some bugs in non-free POIs such as the ones from TomTom. The fact is that
Robser POIs are as trustworthy or even more than the best among others. They
rely in all of you –many chaps– for their continue update. I’d like to be told
what company could count on so many employees all over Spain. Of course, I’m
not that surprised considering the salary we earn in this one, ha, ha, ha. - How can RADARs
be inserted in TomTom? That’s going to be
a bit difficult, because a RADAR is a several-kilo-weight gadget, about a meter
size, and putting it within a palm-sized device would be matter of magic. And
putting all existing ones in, a miracle. However, if you
mean RADAR positions, no luck here. You must read my website. It is very clear
and written in thick letters so you are not overwhelmed. Search, search, sniff,
sniff… - How can a .RAR file be opened? My son, the
Pentagon is shaking like a jelly fearing Hackers of your lineage. If you’re not
handy in computers and software do not complicate things any further. Better
invite a friend, expert on the subject, for lunch (or a drink). It’ll be long
term worthwhile. But invite him, don’t
be so mean. -
Perfect, I’ve already got files open, but I cannot find the way to copy them
into the TomTom 910 hard disk, because I ignore how to get access to it. I have
an USB connection. Could you please help me, genius? Of course, I’ll
help you. There’s something called Instructions Manual. That’s a thing looking
as several square pieces of paper joined together at one side. When you open
it, you’ll find a lot of drawings and small black things called letters that
–once put together into groups– form words. - I’ve installed the RADAR POIs, but I cannot see them. That
after putting them inside the map folder, in sub-folders called ‘icons’ and
‘radars’ so everything is fully organized. What part of the
sentence “Copy BMP and OV2 files together and directly in the map folder,
without any “sub-folders” in between, did you not understand? Do I need to draw
you a map, goofy? - I’m
going to go from Salamanca to Albacete this weekend. How can I only install the
RADARs I’ll find on my way? Please reason. The
whole set of POIs take up just a bit of storage space, almost nothing, less
than 10 dirty photographs of those you keep in your mobile. It is no worth the
effort. Better delete the relevant 10 photos or buy a higher capacity memory card. - Do
you know how to enter RADAR POIs in standard Mercedes-Benz CLK standard
navigators? I mean, those having CD, this is, those working with TRAVELPILOT DX
CD-ROM. I’m afraid not. As
one is poor and can’t have access to such a car, can’t either have access to
such a navigator. And, if in CD, it stinks. CDs are renewed on a payment basis,
and entering the RADAR POIs implies opening the CD and putting them in. That, my friend, is another story. That’s called ‘reverse engineering’. Should you know how to do it, for sure you earn enough to buy a Mercedes. Or to pay someone that can do it for you.
Questions and Responses on TomTom - I’ve
installed TomTom in my mobile and I cannot navigate. Do I need anything else? Yes, you do. You
miss a GPS receiver, which is the device that sends your geographic position to
it and re-orientates you. The GPS works supported by a 24-satellite network (21
operating and 3 backing ones) in a 20,200 Km height orbit above the globe. - What
GPS is the best? It depends. That
one from Carrefool 15-euro worth, for sure isn’t. There are some PDAs provided
with a built-in one. For the remaining devices, I’d advise you to buy a
Bluetooth GPS based on Sirf III technology. Pay attention to
tricks. Cheap GPS incorporate SIRF II (two) technology and you’re going to buy
Sirf III (three). Write this down and look for ‘technical specifications’ at
the end of the relevant instructions manual. - How
much does it cost using the GPS? Nothing. Let’s
say, the cost of loading its battery. Peanuts. In opposition to the use of
mobile phones, GPS coverage, same as radio, is for free. - Can I
install TomTom in my pocket calculator? TomTom has got
versions available for PDAs (Palm & PocketPC) as well as Symbian OS-based
mobile phones. If your device does not comply with these characteristics, no way,
you won’t be able to install it. - hey,
jst surfin intrnet I found your web & I’m struglin 2 put 1 radar warning sw
in my gps, & no suzess & this fter downloading lot of zings frm your web.culd ya hlp me.dont
now.thnx,my name is Xxxx… - What
TomTom version should I install? It depends.
Depends on the PDA or mobile model. This question is too succinct and my
crystal ball has blown. - I
have installed XXX maps in my TomTom GO/ONE and they require activation. TomTom devices are
another story. They are rather simple, but this has a price: everything you
improve or expand on them has a cost. Won’t you figure out that being a hacker
is an easy thing? Anyway, you’re
lucky, there are a number of methods to be able to “buy cheap” up-to-date
TomTom ONE and GO maps. - I’ve
been in my garage for one hour with TomTom on and it still shows the message
“Invalid GPS signal”. It is not under coverage. What am I doing wrong? Just being IN the
garage. GPS satellites are 20,000 Km high and their coverage is easily lost if not
in the open. Narrow streets, high buildings or interiors make the signal become
lost. - How
do I install TomTom 6 maps in my TomTom 5? (or vice versa.) Each TomTom
version supports a set of maps, so I just give a simple answer: this cannot be
done. Well, it can, but
unless you are a software engineer or an expert hacker, don’t try.
- Can I just install in TomTom 6 the map of my village
and surroundings? - I don't travel very
much. Ah! In case it helps, it is 'Abrótanos del
Montejo', and my e-mail
address for you to send it to me is meanhick@hotmeal.com
[1, 2, 3, …10] Let's see, why the
fuckin' hell you're searching a map of your area when you already know it? A navigator is hopefully intended not to become lost in unknown places. In addition you're tightwad and a whiner. Memory cards are cheap, they
cost much less than what you spend every weekend in drinks and condoms.
- Why the name 'kachoperro'?
(Kachoperro stands for 'greatdog' or 'naughtyfellow', I would say).
Reason: because I want. Why not? When I started in the internet I liked to be
called 'Sister Citroën', 'Mary Poppins' or 'Brother Broom'. But, in fact, my personality was not much in
line with such nicks.
- Are you human or animal?
I make few orthographical mistakes (in Spanish,
I mean – that’s only a poor translation into English, so blame another). Do you really believe I could do it if I had claws instead of fingers? Anyway, sometimes people close to me say I am an animal.
- Why are you that rude when answering? I’m not rude, but
blunt. Spanish [translation] is a rich language that allows you say much
with few words, and without beating about the bush. I hate being ‘politically
correct’. I’m not one to mince words. I believe in calling a spade a spade. - Jeez,
I’m afraid to send you an e-mail. Don’t be silly. I
don’t think an e-mail bite hurts. Send it to me if you want and I will answer
(or not) upon my view or as I consider you deserve. My bark’s worse than my
bite… - You
say you don’t know about web design. But the webpage is attractive. Thanks. It takes
me a lot of hard work. I struggle with it day after day and I’m making some
progress. You should see the first page I made… -
Why have you put those so enjoyable drawings? Because I like
them. Because I am a drawing, so I give work to some colleagues.
And because this
website receives visitors from Iceland, USA, Czech Republic, Japan… So I try to make their
navigation easier. And I wonder… what
does a Japanese have to do in this neck of the woods? I’m afraid not
