The Maritime Field Investigation Group of the University of Oviedo (MaFIG-UniOvi)

The MaFIG-UniOvi components are professors and researchers of the University of Oviedo (UniOvi), that impart their teaching in the High Nautical School of Gijón (HNSG). The HNSG was the first nautical school certified world by ISO-9002/94 rules in accordance with STCW. The certification was carried out by the Lloyd's Register and credited by UKAS in date December, 19 of 2000.

The MaFIG-UniOvi components are Captains or Marine Engineers, most of them are doctors, and could supplement with doctors in Industrial Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, etc. We have specialists in the next maritime fields:

§ Ship’s Theory and Naval Construction: Hull, sub-division, intact and damage stability (vessel free floating or on stranding/grounding), structural resistance (including by finite elements), ships salvage response, advance resistance and propulsion, ship motions.

§ Navigation, maneuvering and GPS.

§ Communications: GMDSS.

§ STCW and ISM codes implementation: Teaching and training, safety, pollution prevention and pollution response, contingency plans. Internal inspections of quality systems.

§ Fire-fighting and pollution-fighting.

§ Human factor: Prevention of risks at work. The human factor effect in the maritime accidents. Human factor of the leader in emergency cases.

§ Marine motors.

§ Emissions control.

§ Energy saving.

§ Hull, equipment and engines maintenance.

§ Forensic analysis on ship's sinking.

§ Also, we could incorporate other researchers, for example in economics and maritime legislation.
