Megaliths of Catalonia

What is Arcis?

Megaliths are prehistorical constructions made of big stones.

Arcis wants to spread their knowlegde in order that all people become aware about their value and the importance of the catalan megalithic heritage. This ought bring a major protection, consolidation and restoration ot these monuments which, many times, are exposed to a great danger of destruction. Risk that, often, makes them to miss.

Arcis is not an academic web page, neither has a desire for cientific content. These are pages of heritage content and spreading. Even more, they deal with a specific heritage, which administrations and people rarely appreciate in their monumental and artistic interest. The fact that the catalan National Art is the so called Romanic Art has motivated that the official culture ignore, in a notory way, a lot of other archaeological and architecthonic manifestations.

Arcis claims in favour of megaliths not only because they are traces of the past, but because they are beautiful monuments that often are placed in the midst of a fun landscape.

The monuments are grouped by districts. When possible a photo shows its actual look while another shows its aspect when it was first published (many of them at the end of XIX and the beggining of XX centuries). A brief description is also given.
